Self-Portrait Cube

Directions

You will create a self-portrait photo cube by using your photography and composition skills. Pair up with a partner in class and go in the hallways, courtyard, outside the gym area, or other places where you will not bother any classes on campus and take six shots of your partner in the following poses. Feel free to wear props (hat, sunglasses) but don't try to be crazy.

Make sure to use good lighting and variations of different types of lighting.

Use good composition with one of the following for each photo. For portraits photography, it does not have to be exact on the point but somewhat close.

    • focal point rule of thirds
    • vertical rule of thirds with the subject
    • horizontal rule of thirds with the subject
    • subject in the middle of the photograph (symmetry)

Use good posing techniques how you learned in class (e.g. s-curve, angles, not straight).

Be creative and take many shots before you get the perfect shot. Make sure you don't have other people in the background of your photos. Read over the photo examples and follow the guidelines.

Take five shots that have one of each category, you can choose which combination to take. For example, for your first shot you may want to choose Medium, High, and with a Hat. Then for your next photo, take a different combination and after you are finished, you should have used all of the requirements in the list below once.

Subject Shot

    1. Wide (but not too wide)
    2. Medium-Wide
    3. Medium
    4. Medium-Closeup
    5. Closeup

Angle

    1. Low
    2. Eye
    3. High
    4. Aerial
    5. Dutch

Backgrounds

    1. Contrasting bright color
    2. Aperture
    3. Patterns
    4. Lines
  1. Foreground (something in the foreground in front of the subject or subject's face, good for closeup)

Props (you can share the props or use your own)

    1. Sunglasses (or other glasses that are not yours)
    2. Hat
    3. Handheld prop
    4. Backpack
    5. Umbrella (you might need to share them among groups)

When finished, make simple lighting and color edits on your phone (view the video below) and make sure they are square photos.

Then upload all of them to Google Drive and post the Drive link and then upload your best five photos (one from each requirement combination) to Schoology. As a comment create a number list 1-5 and name each category combination (e.g. Medium, High, , Lines, Hat).
