Master Shots Tutorial

Master Shots

An Example of a Finished Master Shot Video Tutorial

Part A

Overview

You will apply angle, shot, & cut concepts you previously learned from photography and video and will explore and demonstrate a specific video shots and provide a video lesson to teach it. This assignment will count as a task grade.

Content

Read about your Master Shot from the text and examples from the site (password howzit). Find the text title slide on the site and then read the text content explaining it. The visual examples/diagrams always follow the content text explanation; they do not coordinate with the title below them but instead, before them.

For example, in this slide the image example is not Side by Side. Instead, the Side by Side example can be found on the next slide (it is always after the title, not directly above it).

Shot Summary

Write short paragraphs in your own words explaining the shot. You will later be using this paragraph to narrate your shot. Make sure to put the category and specific Master Shot as your heading before you start writing your paragraph.

Simply Storyline Summary

You will now create a simple and short storyline, 15-30sec that you will use to illustrate your Master Shot; make sure the scene content is appropriate to the Master Shot. You will be in a group of four and of your other three members that you will film during next class at school, you will be the main camera person and you will have two actors. The other member will video you video recording the scene so that you can better explain the Master Shot later. Summer students will not be divided into a group but will get together to film or use other friends to help film.

Write a summary of your storyline and the storyline background while indicating the actor names and roles. Try to have your location in or outside the gym area. Let me know if you need another location.

Example

Location: Stairs outside the gym area

Tired Student: Billy

Ambitious Student: Bob

Props Needed: big yellow hat for Bob, deck of cards, black jacket for Billy

Summary: Write summary of the simple and short storyline

The total acting scene that illustrates the Master Shot, including the combined video clips shot, should not be more than 15-30 seconds. There will not be any audio after you edit your clips except for music background. You must use and bring at least two props to add more entertainment. These props cannot be typical things that you would find in your locker or at school. They must be unique and appear that you purposely brought these from home to use in your video. These props can also include creative clothing.

Storyboard

Summer students: View this page and the videos while taking good notes in your CA book. Take screenshots of your notes to post for this assignment.

You should have been given a one-page storyboard (for those who are absent or taking CA summer, use the Storyboard Template & print it) and with it, draw and create a short scene that would clearly illustrate your Master Shot. Make sure you fill out the V.A.S. info for each. Do a good job because you will take a photo of your storyboard and insert in into your video to explain the scene. You do not need to draw the camera on the storyboard like the example below.

Storyboard Images

Scan or take a photo/photos of your storyboards. If you take the photos, make sure they are in a well-lit room with plenty of light (natural light from a window works best). Do not have any shadows on your image.

Post to WP (title it Task 4.1a Master Shots & tag it Tasks) your

    1. Master Shot paragraph summary
    2. Storyboard images & CA note shots
    3. A short paragraph explaining your storyboard plot and what is going on and what props are going to be brought and used so that your actors can simply read your summary and look at your storyboard and know what to do.
    4. Remember, next class you will film in class and it is required that you bring a camera that can record video with the correct SD card reader or a phone with high quality video and the cord so you can transfer the files. If you do not bring your card reader or cord for your camera or phone you will not get credit for the materials grade but you can still use them. Do something now that will give you a reminder to bring these and your props.

Film

Now you will think of a short storyline clip using the seven Cs. You may use a scene from your film if you think it would work well. If you make up the scene, do not choose stereotypical scenes but instead, make them creative and interesting. If you have conversations, make sure the camera is close enough to pick up quality audio that can be heard. The acting scene should be less than 31 seconds. You will need two cameras, one to film the actual scene and one to film an wide angle view of the scene with includes the person filming.

Editing

When you edit your video, start the video with a black background slide that says the shot name and By Your Name with a small picture of yourself in black and white. Then, start the video with you starting to explain a brief summary of the shot, when it is best to use it, and the setup of the shot. While you are talking, cut away to show the wide angle shots of where the actor(s) are in relation to the camera and camera person that you see. Continue to narrate how to setup the shot and tips to make it good. Then fade out to black and show the actual clip. End the video on just a fade to black after the clip is finished.

Adding

Add soft background music with no words and make sure it does not distract or is too loud and takes away from your narration. Add two sound effects. You can decide on the total length of the video but do not make it too long...be sure it flows well and try to add humor & energy.

Posting

Upload the video to your YT and to castudent. Name the title of the video the Main Shot topic: Specific topic, Video Shot" (e.g. Fighting Scenes: Speed Punch Video Shot) In the description of the video, write a one sentence summary and by Your Name. Embed the castudent YT video at the top of the page using the following settings:

Then view your video and click "Share" to the right of the "Add to" -- then click Embed and check mark "Use old embed code" located below the HTML code.

Then go to your page your created and in edit mode, click on the HTML icon on the toolbar and paste your HTML in the box after you delete everything inside the box. Change all the width sizes to "600" and all the height sizes to "385" & click update.

Calendar

On the calendar when it says MVS (Master Video Shots) 1, it means you should have the first of your video shots out of the total shots due. MVS 2 means a second one should be finished. 3.5 means you need to finish all of the googlesite part of 3 except for filming and making the video. If your category has more than 6, then you can choose which 6 you want to do.
