Editing Boxing

Editing Steps

When editing, don't try to be a perfectionist; be efficient. This is a tutorial video and used for learning...it is not a task film. I am just looking to see if the edit is complete according to the directions.

Order & Trim

Do not import files yet. Now each of the three group members will take one of the following sets of directions and will edit that section of the boxing video. If your group has four members, have the two oldest share one section or decide another way to split it up.

    • Directions #1-12 (Group Member #1)
    • Directions #13-21 (Group Member #2)
    • Directions #22 - 26 (Group Member #3)

Import

If you job is to edit the first section then import only those clips into iMovie

Titles

Have Group Member #1 make a solid color background with the "Centered" text title. Type the title "The Boxing Match" and in the subtext below the main title, type "Applying various film cuts, angles, shots, and composition.

Have Group Member #3 add slow rolling credits at the end and indicate the roles: Referee: Name, Female Boxer: Name, & Male Boxer (Male/Female Boxer #2 if needed in a group of four). For the background of the rolling credits, use a blooper clip(s).

Order

Edit your section in order and make the necessary cuts and trimming to achieve the requirements from the Fight Scene Plan. If you are missing scenes or your group did not film correctly, at this point it is too late and you will have to submit "as is" and possibly get points off.

When finished with the order, correct any underexposed or overexposed video clips so that they all have the similar exposure look and color tint.

Effects

Each group member must find one or two clips that would benefit from the following and make that edit in their section:

    • Duplicate a 1-3 second clip and repeat the clip for emphasis
    • Choose an appropriate clip and use slow motion (can be a duplicate clip or different)
    • Change the speed of any clip(s) to the fast motion of your choice
    • Here is a good example of repeated actions & varying the speeds of clips.

Sounds

Delete the original video audio and add appropriate background music and sound effects (Download Punching Sounds if 2nd or 3rd Section) sound effects & choose the ones that work best for your clips; feel free to create your own and funny ones). Put in background music so that there is not clips that are silent.

Combine

Each member should export their part of the video as Large setting as a Movie, save to their dropbox, and upload to your YT. Then have one of your members combine each of the video parts into one while having the other members give their video file using their SD card or share the Dropbox link and export with the same settings but upload it to their Vimeo account. That member must share the video file with the others so they can post it to their own Vimeo accounts. Post your link to the spreadsheet.

Grading

Grade Rubric

80pts - Completed all the requirements and getting the correct shots, angles, and cuts

20pts - Quality of fighting shots and how realistic it appears using the angle/effect/sound

Individual Grade Rubric

You will be graded on your section only and will include all the requirements.

You will get an individual editing grade based on your editing responsibilities and you will get a separate group grade based on how well the group did on getting the correct shots, angles, and cuts as well as showing realistic fighting scenes with the right camera angles and acting.

  • Directions #1-12

Posterous & Dropbox

When the group member is finished editing, only that person should upload their edited video in large quality to their YT account. Post the YT link to your posterous and the YT link to the spreadsheet.

Then move the video file to your dropbox, log into your dropbox account online, find the file, and choose to share it with your classmate who is the second group member to edit the film using their class email dropbox account (more details, if needed, on how to use dropbox share). Then upload your video file to YT and title it in the following format: Fight Scene Edits - Step 1: Order & Trim

Step One Example:

Step 2: Titles & Speed

The second group member should download the video online from the shared video email invitation from the first group member. They need to add a title slide. Choose any solid color background with the "Centered" text title. Add slow rolling credits at the end and indicate the roles: Referee, Victorious Opponent, & Losing Opponent. Find one or two clips that would benefit from repeating action. Duplicate the clip and repeat the clip for emphasis. Now choose any appropriate clip and use slow motion and another clip fast motion. Here is a good example of repeated actions & varying the speeds of clips.

Step 3: Sounds & Final Edits

After you get the shared video file from dropbox, delete the original video audio and add appropriate background music and sound effects (download fighting sounds & import into your iTunes; feel free to use your own and funny ones). Finally, make any final revisions that you think would enhance the video.

Posterous & Dropbox

Follow the Posterous & Dropbox directions above (found in Step 1 above) and share with the last group member.
