Elementary Chapel Stories

Story Setup

You will be placed with a partner in your class and your group will be assigned one of the character traits above that the elementary students learn. Your group will then come up with a story centered on one of the elementary school's values that they teach the children and create an animation 3-4 minutes in AI and AE that will be shown in chapel.

Your children's story will have at least 10 scenes and be about 3 minutes long. One partner will create the story backgrounds and animate at least two objects in the background while the other partner will create all of the characters and animate the them according to the action of the story. This project is a group effort but an individual (not group) grade.

Characters/Background

Partner A: Follow the directions to complete this Characters for this checkpoint.

Partner B: Read the directions and draw your first Illustrator story background.

Examples

CHECKPOINT AUDIO directions

CHECKPOINT 1-8 directions

CHECKPOINT 9

Partner B (bg9)

Create a new AI background 854 x 480 and follow the directions to create your next background in AI and import it into AE while animating two background objects and including at least one 3D object.

  • You must place your narration into the background (40 points deducted if you do not) and make sure that by now the narration clearly teaches the Truth, Excellence, or Diversity value that you signed up for. You must literally say the value in your story:
  • "After Tommy lost the race, he learned a valuable lesson about how to demonstrate integrity to others."

Upload the video file to drive and the link to the spreadsheet and also the background to the MF Picasa album.

Partner C (bg8)

Animate the next background.

  • You must insert at least one sound effect (40 points deducted if you do not) and make sure that your partner has his or her narration in the background already.
  • If you animate the Guardian in this scene, you must move at least two parts of his body (arms, mustache, eyes, etc).
  • If your partner did not create a horizontal pan yet for your story, it must be done by bg8 and you will need to do it if they did not.
    • If the Guardian has not appeared yet, he should appear by bg8.

Export the video file and place in your public CA Story Drive folder along with the AE file and the video link to the spreadsheet.

CHECKPOINT 10

Partner B (bg10)

Create a new AI background 480 x 810 but the After Effects composition is still 854 x 480. Follow the directions to create your next background in AI and import it into AE while animating two background objects and including at least one 3D object. In this animation, you partner will later create a vertical pan into the sky and use opacity to make "The End" appear in the sky (example). You must place your narration into the background (40 points deducted if you do not).

Upload the video file to drive and the link to the spreadsheet and also the background to the MF Picasa album.

Partner C (bg9)

Animate the next background.

  • You must insert at least one sound effect (30 points deducted if you do not) and make sure that your partner has his or her narration in the background already.
  • Zoom in on one part of the background where the main action is taking place like this

Export the video file and place in your public CA Story Drive folder along with the AE file and the video link to the spreadsheet.

CHECKPOINT 11 COMPILE

Partner B (drive)

Usually partner c animates the characters but for the last background, you will since they are compiling the whole story. In this animation, you will create a vertical pan (tutorial) into the sky and use opacity to make "The End" appear in the sky (example). You must place your narration into the background (30 points deducted if you do not) and 30 points for the vertical animation.

Export the video file and give it to your partner so they can add it to the final combined video.

place in your public CA Story Drive folder along with the AE file and the video link to the spreadsheet.

Partner C (compile)

Read your partner's directions in blue text above. You should have received background animations 1-10 from your partner (they should be in a Google Drive folder with AE/video links on the spreadsheet to download). Some of the earlier backgrounds may not have narrations so just drag in the narration files into the background. There should be a link on the spreadsheet to the narration files if you need access to them. If not, ask partner for them or temporarily record them again on your MacBook. If you did not add your sound effects to certain backgrounds, complete it.

If your partner did not completed certain backgrounds, you should have still animated them with a drawing sketch background and just use those for now and include them when you compile.

Make sure you have the final 10 video files of the 10 backgrounds, each having sound effects and narration and import the video files into iMovie to combine the files together to create the story. In iMovie make the title three seconds long with a textured background in iMovie (example video intro) and follow the directions.

Export the video file and place in your public CA Story Drive folder and the video link to the spreadsheet.

Also, upload the video file to the teacher Drive using the file name #StoryAnimation "Title" , a Story on Diversity by Jane & Kim:

A Block Design

F Block Design

Remember that you were originally instructed to have a Google Drive folder for your project with all of your background After Effects Files in the folder and organized as well as your story sound effect mp3 files. Also, create a folder called Final Videos and place the final exported videos 1-10 in the folder. Ensure to make the folder public to view (not edit) and post the link to the spreadsheet. If your partner did not complete one of their backgrounds, they will then be able to open your AE file and change the sketch background to the real background.

For your final project, you will be graded on each of the backgrounds and animations.

Do not Do:

CHECKPOINT 12 COMPILE

Partner B (drive)

Using one of your best scenery backgrounds and background animations, use it for your opening title animation and add your story's title and subtitle (your story's lesson which was assigned to you). Make it three seconds long. Watch the example.

The Lost Baseball Bat

A Story on Stewardship

Then for the next two pages (also three seconds each), create your author pages for both you and your partner by following the video tutorial. Watch the example.

When finished, create a folder inside your Story Project Google Drive folder called Intro and place the three video files there and post the folder's link to the spreadsheet.

Partner C (compile)

CHECKPOINT 13 FINAL SUBMISSION

Partner B (Images)

Create a new Picasa album and upload your final background images 1-10 in order. Make the album public and place the link to the spreadsheet. This is your submission for your Illustrator design background grade which you are now submitting to be graded.

Partner C (Video)

Combine your final 10 background animation videos and intro in iMovie.

Remember that were originally instructed to have a Google Drive folder for your project with all of your Illustrator background files and background After Effects Files in the folder and organized as well as your story narration mp3 files. Also, create a folder called JPGs and place the final background JPGs in the folder. Ensure to make the folder public to view (not edit) and post the link to the spreadsheet.

Again, the folder should have backgrounds 1-10 with folders and files for the following:

    • AI Backgrounds
    • AE Animations
    • MP3 Narrations
    • JPG Backgrounds

If you have any missing background animations, fix and update those. If your partner created animations with a sketch background, you will need to get the AE file from their Drive and add your background and two background animations. If you do not complete this, the video will be incomplete and your project grade will be a 0% until you complete it since the story for Elementary chapel is useless if there is one or more missing backgrounds. If you still missing any completed backgrounds and animations on the spreadsheet when this checkpoint is due, you will be responsible for turning in the final project if your partner has completed all of their work.

Howzit!

Next class partner A will Animate the characters in BG3 and partner B will create BG4 with two moving objects in the background. From now on, these story BG checkpoints will be timed assignments and you will have the class period to complete it so do not overachieve and design something you do not think you will finish in class. In 2012 & 2013, this is how I did it in my design classes.

High school teachers usually give timed tests that usually take the full period. Of course if you had a take home test you could probably do better but you would probably spend twice the amount of time taking it because you want to be extra careful to get all the right answers and double check your work. I do not want you to be meticulous and spend hours on this at home...I want you to be efficient.

By giving you a time limit, this is also a way to assess how efficient and effective you are at using your Illustrator and After Effects' skills that you learned earlier in the quarter while ensuring that you did all the work and did not have a friend do it or copy something from the Internet.

If you would like more time to work on it, feel free to get ahead. Or after the class, you may use a coupon and turn it in late but be sensitive to your partner as they may need your work to move on. If you are partner A (character animation) and waiting on partner B to create the background...just insert the rough draft pencil sketch of the background into AE and create your animations on that and your partner can add the same background later. If your partner does not have the sketched background, you can quickly sketch it on paper for them and complete your animation. Remember that it is not a group grade so do what you can to complete your sections and don't forget to include the Guardian as the hero or helper of the story.

And remember, you will be making a lot elementary kids happy with your animations!
