Editing

  1. Checkpoint One - Rough Draft
    1. Now go into iMovie and organize at least half of your video clips in your events and use the key words feature and label the clips Act I, II, or III and also add a key work that describes the general location to help you organize them better (e.g. classroom, home, iPark). Take a screenshot of your clips in the event section and take a screenshot of your online dropbox showing the video clips. Edit your film in chronological order.
    2. Keep in mind your filming requirements that you will be graded on and be sure that your video is 3-4 minutes unless approved otherwise.
    3. Finish editing your film so that you have a complete rough draft. Add markers on your timeline to show key clips:
    4. -Start of Act II
    5. -Introduction of the antagonist
    6. -Climax
    7. Upload it to YT and post the YT link Posterous and the YT link to the spreadsheet; you can upload it as unlisted or public (talk to me if you prefer any other). When it is on YT, make sure the YT quality is at least 480p when uploaded (if your final film is less than this, points will be deducted).
    8. Ask one CA video student that is not in your specific block (e.g. ca2) to view your video and give at least four ways you can improve it as a Youtube comment under your video within 24 hours after the due date of this checkpoint. Have them reference the time of the video clip they are talking about by the time (e.g. 0:12 it needs a better establishing shot that relates to the main scene). This will create a link to that part of the video so they can quickly go there.
    9. This checkpoint is due Thur, March 8.
  2. Checkpoint Two - Peer Review
    1. Y-Day classes have a sub for this checkpoint so it is very important that you work diligently in class for the substitute and show them respect. I instructed them to write down names or tell me the desk of students that do not appear to be on task and working efficiently.
    2. In class, pair up with somebody that does not sit in the seat next to you on the right or left.
    3. If you are absent, have someone complete the comment about your video online but you do not need to comment on your classmate's video.
        • Have them view your film in iMovie once through without any stops or distractions.
        • Then have that person identify the key parts (shown below) of the storyline structure and indicate the time. Have them write this as a comment on your Editing Checkpoint 1 Rough Draft Posterous Post.
        • If you don't have a rough draft or post, post an article to posterous labeled Peer Review and have them fill in the info looking at what you do have for your film or using your script.
        • -Introduction of the antagonist 0:14
        • -One important piece of background information portrayed in Act I 0:45
        • -Catalyst event and start of Act II 1:16
        • -Another conflict that causes rising action 2:00
        • -Climax 2:55
        • -Conclusion 3:40
        • -Any crutch 1:12
        • Have the person tell you and write a short phrase on what they liked about your film
        • Then have them write two ways you could have improved the storyline so that it is better understood and two ways you could fix the editing.
        • Now do the same for their film and write the same comment structure for their film in their Posterous article.
        • When finished, take a screenshot of your comment that you posted on your classmate's Posterous and a screenshot of their comment on yours and post them to Posterous and the link to the spreadsheet.
        • Now with the time remaining, go back and edit your film according to the comments.
        • Video Appearance
        • Go through your video again and make sure most or all of your video clips have a similar look and feel to them. If they are too dark, try to brighten it but not too much otherwise it will look too grainy. All of your video clips should be horizontal widescreen. If they are not or if some are vertical, simply crop them.
        • Music Video
        • Remember, if you are creating a music video, you need the lines of text at the bottom left of the frame five seconds after the start and five seconds before the end of the video. Be sure to indicate that it is a cover song.
        • Format
        • Name of Original Artist - Cover by your name or the one you had sing
        • "Name of Song"
        • Music Created by First Last Name (Steven Song)
        • Example:
        • SWITCHFOOT - COVER BY SARAH WALDROP
        • "DARE YOU TO MOVE"
        • GUITAR BY STEVEN SONG PIANO BY SARAH WALDROP

After the videos are in order, upload it to YT in the largest setting and name it Film Order and post the YT link to the spreadsheet and to your Posterous. Your video does not have to be finished in editing, just most of the clips in basic chronological order.

        • Audio
        • Also, when you view your film, notice the green bars that move and show your audio levels (see the screenshot below, the green levels are below the boy's hand). You need to make sure that all of the audio is consistent and at the same or similar level. Usually it is good to try and have the green levels at 50-70% of the full bar. If they reach further and the green bar turns yellow or red, you need to fade it down.
        • For your final project, the rubric roughly consists of the following:
        • 60pts (3pts each) cuts & action shots filming requirements
        • 10pts story structure, story flow/makes sense, use of actors
        • 10pts Audio clarity and consistency
        • 10pts Video quality, lighting
        • 10pts Composition
