Self-Portrait Editing

Read the tips on taking portrait photos if you have not already. After you have your self-portrait approved by Mr. Heil via comment or email, you will now begin editing the photo, your face in particular. Most of my comments are short and I try to tell you how to improve since your friends tell you what is good about them. I am only trying to help you improve so do not take the comments personally. If you did not get it approved or you have to take new photos, then do so and email mark.heil@yisseoul.org the Picasa link to the photos that need to be approved before editing.

Make sure your photo is the correct photo quality. God made you beautiful just the way you are but we are just going to use PS to make some edits so that you can practice PS tools.

Use your photo and follow the instructions and techniques in the video tutorial by Marlene (no need to comment). If you do not have a certain tool in PS, then skip that small part. Also review the Parts Tutorial: Retouching and Repairing [video I][video II] and use those tools for your face as well.

When you are finished editing your photo, save it as a JPG. Create a new PS file 4in x 6in portrait size 150dpi. Drag your edited self-portrait JPG into this PS document and resize it to fit. If you have to resize the photo to make it bigger in order to fit into the 4x6 size then your photo is definitely too small. Create a 2in rectangle (choose a color that coordinates well with your photo) that stretches horizontally over the bottom two inches of the photo and make sure your self-portrait is behind this rectangle like the example above. This will create a square for your self portrait but you need 4x6 for when you print it (e.g. e-mart) and then you will cut off the 2in rectangle. Use a font and color that fits suits you best and type your first and last name. If your name is short, type it in one line. If long, two lines like Hannah's above. Make sure your name does not get too close to the edge of the photo like the one on the right.

When finished upload the JPG (save as max quality) to the MF Picasa album and in the caption type your classID. As a comment type the location and who took the photo:
