Master Shots Shooting

Instructions

Filming

You will be given part of class to film your footage for your Master Shot (if you are absent, then you must film outside of class with anyone). You may shoot around the gym area or outside near the playground next to the pool window. If you want to film in a different location you must ask permission. If you are in a group of four, each student will be given a max time of 15 minutes to film during class; you may not go over your time limit.

Requirements

Don't forget, when you edit your storyline clips together, the total time cannot be more than 30 seconds. Make sure you have a storyline and it can be simple and shallow but should show progression. Each group should have at least two cameras with SD card readers or cords that can quickly transfer the video files immediately after your group is done filming.

Film Time

The person who is prepared the most or has the best storyboards should go first. It is up to the other group members to make sure they tell the student filming when his or her time is up so that they don't take up other students' time. If students go over and the last person runs out of time, then that person will just have to use the footage they have or take a late grade and film after class since you must complete all filming during class.

Remember you will be able to use two actors in your group and it is required that they have, where, or use at least a couple props to coordinate with your storyline. A small part of your grade is how well you planned and use the props; make sure you use your own props that you brought.

So you have two actors, you will film your actors, and the other group member will film a long shot of the process and you filming. Make sure you tell them where and how you want them to film and look at their footage after to see if is what you want since you will be deducted points if they film wrong for you.

When filming, make sure to use good composition:

    • Enough lead room
    • 180 degree rule
    • Rule of thirds or symmetry when applicable
    • Make sure when filming that the cameras are very still and not shaky (important)

Horizontal

All video footage should be horizontal; do not record vertical on your phone.

Acting

Before you go and film, make sure you are familiar with your group members' Master Shot plan in terms of how they want you to act; they should have emailed you instructions on their Posterous how to act if you were chosen.

Post

When finished, transfer your video footage to your Macbook and make a copy of your files and transfer them to your 4gb USB flash drive to be used as a backup. Import your video files into iMovie as a new event and take screenshots of both camera's video clips in the event section of your iMovie project. You do not need to edit your film yet.

Post the screenshots to Posterous and the link to the spreadsheet.
