Documentary Editing

Act I

Follow all the requirements and directions for each of the Parts below for your documentary. Work on the intro if you have it filmed. If you don't have the intro filmed yet but you do have the interview filmed, then work on editing the interview. If you do not have any footage at all you must work on the Lip Sync assignment but not those who have footage to edit.

• Review the overview, requirements, and the info on Subtitles if you are using them.
• Your footage should be already imported into Adobe Premier: one event called B Roll and another event called Interview.
• Begin by editing your the intro of film according to one of the intro options.
• Then edit the first Act of your film which covers the first 25% of your documentary before the first conflict. Edit the first 45 seconds.
• When you edit and splice out some of the interview, use b-roll to cover up the transition so that the clip does not "glitch" (see example, first part is incorrect & second is correct and both do not have rule of thirds)
• Post Export to YT.

Act II

Act III: Finish Interview Editing

• Finish editing the rest of your interview. Make sure that the interview is 2-3:30 minutes long and edit out all distracting pauses, times when you asked questions, or mistakes made by the person being interviewed. As you are watching and editing the interview, make a list in an email of specific types of at least 10 b-roll shots you will need film in order to match what they are talking about. Also next to the b-roll shot notes write down ideas a cut or action shot to go along with the b-roll since you have to meet those requirements.

• 0:28- throwing football (tracking)
• 0:18- kids playing (swish pan)
• 1:05- show "teaching" (horizontal)
• 1:24- show something with Bible (head on shot)
• 1:40- Show being principal (head on)
• 2:23- Show being a father (point of view)
• 2:45 - Eating with his family
• 3:16:01- showing future ambitions (arc)
• Post - Send the b-roll shot list and a screenshot of your Adobe Premiere project showing at least two minutes of your timeline with the edited interview (you don't have to include b-roll clips at this time but you can if you have them). You may be asked to show your interview to the teacher at the beginning of next class to verify.

Part D: Act III

• Now add your B-roll to your interview Remember that when you submit the final it must be between 2-4 min (but only go to the max time limit if it is all quality footage).
• Remember to use at least one appropriate nat sound in one of your clips for Act II
• For your last clip, fade to black. You will be creating your credits in a future checkpoint.
• If you are creating a short film or MV then you must have at least half of your footage edited.
• Make sure by the end of Act III you have established an emotional pull towards the audience and it ends in an appropriate way.
• Post
• Take a screenshot of just your timeline (enlarge your timeline so it shows a closeup of your entire interview over 2min like the image below) and make sure you have at least half of your b-roll clips edited and inserted into the timeline on top of the interview.
• Insert the link to the spreadsheet.

Part E: Finish Rough Draft

• Watch the video tutorial as a review in editing in Premiere while taking notes & don't forget to click "Thumbs Up"' so I can verify you viewed it. Practice the shortcuts and tools on your documentary as you watch the video.
• Finish adding your B-roll to your interview.
• Remember that when you submit the final it must be between 2-4 min (but only go to the max time limit if it is all quality footage). Your B-Roll should cover at least 50% of the documentary and the interview in the other parts. Do not show an interview clip for more than 10 seconds.
• For your last clip, fade to black. You will be creating your credits in the next checkpoint.
• Don't forget that in Part A you created one of the intro options and must have it finished during this checkpoint. If you don't know how to create text in Premiere then you can add just the text for the next checkpoint but make sure you have your intro clips edited.
• Make sure by the end of Act III you have established an emotional pull towards the audience and it ends in an appropriate way.
• Review the shortcuts below to help you in editing.
• Post
• Take a screenshot of just your timeline (enlarge your timeline so it shows a closeup of your entire interview over 2min like the image below) and make sure you have at least half of your b-roll clips edited and inserted into the timeline on top of the interview. Then export the video and upload it to YT as "unlisted." Email the screenshot & YT link to WordPress and to a classmate who you will ask to view your video and give comments and suggestions for editing improvements as a WordPress comment in the post. Insert the link to the spreadsheet. Your rough draft is now finished. Next checkpoint you will add text titles, sounds, and any subtitles.

Shift + Fx + Delete: Deletes footage and moves footage together (Ripple Delete)

Go to Edit, then label= change color of your footage

Alt + Delete: to remove the audio from video in your timeline ( remember to click the audio part and press delete after releasing the alt key)

(+) and (-): to zoom in or zoom out the timeline

Shift + razor tool : to cut the part from footage

Command + K: add an edit

Part E: Sound & Credits

• Watch the short video tutorial on text to help you add your title if you did not already and for your credits.
• Credits [example]
• not fit on one line. Follow these guidelines for your credits:
• +Special thanks can be the main person and anyone else you want to thank (only write their name)
• +Music by: type the composer and if there is more than on then use only their last names.
• Subtitles
  • Reminder: make sure you have your Subtitles correct if you have them in your film
  • Remember, Do not show an interview clip for more than 10 seconds.
  • Use at least one sound effect (e.g. SoundBible) and place it in Audio Layer 3
  • Layer two should be the B-Roll audio and Layer one is the interview audio.
  • Background music if needed: You can use nonlyrical & nonpopular instrumental music for your intro if needed and at the very end of your documentary for dramatic effect and during credits if you prefer; a useful site is Incompetech.
  • When finished take a screenshot of your title, credits, & your entire timeline like the example and post to WordPress.
