Overview

To create creative scenes and apply After Effects

Since this is an important task it will carry a double weight in the gradebook.

Watch the video at the top of the page and the "Making of" video at the bottom of the page. We will be creating a film similar to this as a class. There are other schools who have tired this (example) but I believe you guys can do so much better than they did.

Each student will have one flash shooting scene to create, direct, and edit. Then we will combine the top 6 to create the video. The scene must be 5-10 seconds in length after editing and cuts. When filming, bring your tripod if you have one and any cameras, large or small, you have as long as they have a flash.

Scenes

Matthew 9th will be creating the opening storyline, talk with Josh before hand to plan.

The following is the order of the scenes. They do not have to directly be connected to each other. The person who is in charge of that scene will direct and shoot that scene of the person shooting the flash and the person being flashed. The person being froze is the main person being froze in the scene; you can have more than one person being froze but they need to be minor characters and more in the background so that they are not easily seen since they will have to be reused and wear different costumes than when they appear before since we technically only have enough for one person each to be froze.

The red group will film together and the purple group will film together.

    1. Matthew K - (Matthew H freezing Hannah C)
  1. Matthew H - (Glee freezing Matthew K)
    1. Hannah C - (Matthew H freezing Glee)
    2. Glee - (Kelly freezing Matthew K in a different costume)
    3. Kelly - (Hannah C freezing Matthew H in a different costume)
    4. Hannah K - (Josh freezing Donna)
    5. Her - (Hannah K freezing Josh)
    6. Donna - (Matthew H freezing Hannah K)
  2. Josh - creating the ending with self-timer to freeze Matthew H
    1. BJ will compile all the clips together, add soundtrack, & 3D lighting

The storyline is going to be that a guy is going to be a bully and he does not like girls and will flash freeze a girl. Another girl sees this and runs to tell her friends. They devise a plan to take on the bully and group of boys while the boys do the same.

Boys will wear...

    • any dark colors
    • sunglasses
    • war paint on their faces

Girls will wear...

    • girls will wear bright colors
    • wear their hair in two pony tails
    • reading glasses or big glasses with no lenses in them

Both will wear creative clothes and costumes:

    • cool or crazy hats
    • creative or over-sized pants
    • flamboyant shirts

When filming, bring an extra pair of clothes etc in case we need you to be a different person in the video.

Place the final video in your dropbox and share it with ca0beomjun15@gmail.com. Take a screenshot of the screen that shows you are sharing it with ca0beomjun15@gmail.com and

Part A: Planning

Planning is the most important part of creating this video. It needs to be very creative and incorporate a lot of action (e.g. jumping, movement, etc). Since your scene is only 5-10 seconds it needs to be powerful.

You will be graded on how creative your idea, storyboard, filming, and editing.

Open a new email and include the following:

Specific location at school you will film:

Number of additional students needed in your shot if any (include genders):

Type of camera/flash used to shoot:

A description of how the scene will take place:

Then print out one page of the Storyboard Template and fill out six boxes while writing the VAS descriptions. Pay attention to camera angles. Take a photo of the storyboard and include it as an attachment in the email.

Dress up according to the guidelines above in what you will be bringing to wear for filming day (boys, you do not have to put paint on your face now) and take a photo. Now dress up in you second set of clothes in case you need to be filmed twice (likely) and take a photo. Make sure both sets of clothes is very different. Attach the photos to the email.

Email to Posterous and post the link to the spreadsheet. Then have the person before you and after you in the order list above comment on your idea. Ask them to tell you what they like about it and give at least 1-2 good creative suggestions to make your scene even better! After both have commented in Posterous on your idea, leave a comment in the same post after their comments describing an alternative idea that takes your original idea and alters it a little to make it even better.

Make sure you have a backup idea in case your posted idea does not get approved when graded.

Prep to know and bring for Part B filming:

Don't forget that tomorrow we are filming at 1pm. Make sure you bring both sets of "costumes" and creative clothes to wear. You may also bring props. Don't forget, guys wear sunglasses and girls wear big glasses (fake or real). Also bring 1-2 cameras with a flash & tripod if you have them.

Make sure you are well prepared. We will be filming as a group and since it is around school I will be supervising but you will be directing your scene.

Since it is a short scene, 15min should be plenty of time to film it so make sure you have everything planned before you get to school so when it is your turn you know what you are doing. Hope you have some creative scenes with a lot of action, movement, and jumping. Filming everyone, we should be done in a few hours if it goes smoothly.

Make you also have planned what cutaway shots you are going to film before and after your scene (e.g. in the flash example they had closeup shots of people's feet running, or a guy grabbing a camera, cool angle of running, etc).

Should be fun!

Part B: Filming

Import all of your video clips to your computer. Make sure you have a backup of the video clips either on your SD card or transfer a copy to a USB flash drive or Dropbox. If you have video that someone else filmed then post the clips to Posterous for them to download or use Dropbox.

Take a screenshot of the list of your list of video files and post it to Posterous and the link to the spreadsheet.

Part C: Editing

Now is the tough part...editing. It was fun to plan and shoot it but if you do not edit your footage correctly it won't turn out well or look realistic. This assignment part will test your ability in After Effects. You may want to review the clone tutorial. Remember to keep your final clip ten seconds or less with quick cuts. If you have edited your clip and don't know how to make it shorter, email me what you have edited and I will let you know. The first (Matthew K) and last (Josh) scenes will be a little longer, about 30sec or less.

Try to edit this right away and not to wait until late at night since BJ needs to edit these soon.

When finished, add key sound effects. Do not add any effects for the flash...BJ will do all the flash sound effects. Also don't do any 3D lighting, he will do that as well. But make sure your video is not too dark and not too bright.

Upload

When you are finished editing, post it to YT & name it Flash Draft classID and ask two current CA students to watch it and have them find at least 1-2 things to edit and change to make better. They should leave a YT comment for that video draft. Then make your final edits and upload the new version to Vimeo and name it simply Flash.

Post

Finally, upload your second edited Flash video you uploaded to Vimeo directly to Posterous since the upload limit per post is 100mb and the email limit is only 25mb. Then if you still have room in the same post, upload your first and second transitional cuts. If you don't have room, upload them in separate posts and post the links of those articles in one article so it is easy to navigate. In the Posterous article, type any special editing instructions for the person compiling all of the clips together. Also indicate anything that should be added in the final editing process. Type the person's name who was shooting the flash and the person who was frozen.
