Letter Photography

Overview

There are letters in objects all around us, we just need to have an observant eye. This assignment is to challenge your eyes to see the unseen shapes all around us that form letters

You should have already completed the directions for taking letter photos. You cannot complete the directions below if you have not.

Self-Portrait Edits

After someone has taken your self-portrait photos (directions on how to take them), watch the video tutorial to edit your self-portrait. Add your name in black color but a thin white stroke with cursive font on the bottom right side of the photograph like the example below. Save the image as max quality JPG and upload to WordPress and to the MF Picasa album and the image to the Picasa Album link to the spreadsheet.

Part C: Letter Editing

Follow the directions in the video tutorial.

When finished upload your letter name with your self-portrait after the letters (example below) on a black matte no matter if your name is even or odd then upload it to the MF Picasa album and write your classID in the caption and post the link to the spreadsheet. Then email your JPG photos of the two letters per 4x6in and the final to WordPress.

Put the first and last photo on the horizontal edge of the document and with the extra horizontal space, evenly space the photos out to give a l

do not do:

Open a new PS document that is 6x4in landscape 200 resolution. Then in the menu go to

Image > Mode > Grayscale which will make all your photos black and white.

Insert your first two photo letters of your name into the document. Fit one on the left and one on the right. If you have an odd number then leave the last one with only one letter on the right. Use a guide to divide the document in half horizontally to make sure the photos are equally divided.

Make any minor photo adjustments with the PS tools available. Curves and contrast are important tools in black and white photography.

Save as a JPG full quality and name it classID_1. Hide the layers and insert the next two photos and save it as classID_2. Repeat the process until you are finished. Email these JPG files to Posterous.

Then create a new PS document that is 4in high and 3 multiplied by the number of letters in your name (e.g. Jake, 4 letters x 3 = 12in long) and insert your jpg edited letters in the document to form your name. Choose black as your background. Then create a 1in border matte around the document like you did in the PS Fall tutorial (Image > Canvas Size > increase each of the width and height by one inch) and shown in the example below.

Finally use the marquee tool to place a rectangle around the first letter and go to Edit > Stroke > adjust the stroke to 10px black, which will place a thin black border around the letter and help separate the letters. Continue doing this to all the letters.

See the example below:

ittle gap between them like the example above. When finished add another one inch space on the left and right of the document

so that it is one inch all the way around.
