What have you done for me lately

Right after I joined Amazon, the "fun" started immediately. By my first Friday, I was pretty upset because my work was nothing like the job description. I was definitely deceived on the job responsibilities.

After a few months, the situation started wearing thin. The work/life balance was completely unrealistic. I was once asked why I turned my phone off on a Saturday afternoon even though I wasn't on-call and wasn't expecting any reason to be called if I took my spouse to a movie. This was also around the same time I started hearing that "there's a thousand people out there that would love to have your job", which I continued hearing for the rest of my time there.

After I finished my first year, I started looking looking for a new job elsewhere or a new position within the company, like most employees. This seems to be by design to keep you on your toes and constantly proving you deserve your job. It's totally a "what have you done for me lately" environment.

Overall, it's pretty stressful work environment and most people aren't really happy. Employee morale seems to only be high for those new employees who aren't burnt out yet.  Whenever new people told me how great Amazon is, my response is "tell me that again in two years". I barely made it past the two year mark myself.
