Not family friendly

Compared to other tech companies, Amazon is not family friendly. They make a big deal out of publicizing their shared family leave policy, but the work itself is 24x7 and if you compute your hourly wage based on that, you're not making much at all. If you aren't responding to emails and instant messages on weekends or evenings even when you're not on-call, then you'll quickly be told that you're not a "team player". Jeff Bezos publicly says that he doesn't believe in work life balance and that attitude trickles down to every level of the company. I know a manager who left Amazon when his wife was pregnant to join Facebook, just so that he could take advantage of their family leave policy without being guilt-tripped by his peers, which is what happens here. After he worked there for a year and didn't do very well since he tried to play Amazon's political games in their much healthier culture, he came back to Amazon after he was done using up his family leave benefits. These are the kind of schemers who get promoted at Amazon.
