Destructive Competition

When a new set of teams was created in our department, we hired two senior managers to lead different sections of it. After a year where one senior manager worked hard and was very successful and the other worked hard only at kissing up to his boss, there was a reorganization of those new teams to make the more successful senior manager report up to the kiss-up. The kiss-up then gave the more successful manager a bad review and fired him. This really hurt the morale of everyone in our department since we saw that the harder working and more successful person who everyone liked wasn't able to do anything to challenge his bad review and the kiss-up was easily able to destroy his career since he saw him as a competitive threat.
