Managing upwards

I started working at Amazon 3 years ago. From that time, I have seen company has evolved a lot. Or I should say devolved because the politics increased tremendously.

Amazon has the internal feedback tool through which people can post feedback anonymously about any other employee. The review is totally controlled by your manager. If you do not have good chemistry with your manager, then he (or she) can totally screw up your career at Amazon. Even though Amazon says it uses data-driven performance evaluation of all employees but there are lot of ways your manager can play around with it, like highlighting anything bad someone has said about you, even if it's not true. I would suggest anyone new joining Amazon beware of this.

Also, be prepared to loose your work/life balance. You will be working every evening and almost every weekend. You are expected to respond to emails even when you are on vacation or sick at Amazon. Not responding can mean the end of your job.

Amazon claims it should not be about managing upwards, but that's all it is today.
