Amazon's only benefit is as a career stepping stone

Working at Amazon can have an benefit, even though it has been pretty horrible to be there. In Information Technology, it's very common to jump from position to position while initially climbing the ladder at the beginning of your career. For some, Amazon is the first opportunity they have to add one of the big boys to their resume. After that, the opportunities are pretty much endless. Especially in engineering, the stress can be overwhelming. But right out of college, I was given an SDE offer at Amazon. Facebook, Google, and Microsoft never went anywhere for me at that time.

I then had a full year of Engineering on my resume from Amazon, even though it was a horrible experience with an incompetent boss. If I hadn't gotten this, I'd be grinding away on some unimportant project at some mid-sized company. Even though I only stayed a year, I was then offered a Senior Engineer position at a small company with a bonus package that paid off my college loans in a single year.

I wouldn't make a career move at Amazon. But it's good to know that it can be a career progression tool.
