No One Unscathed

Just wrapped up a role at AWS for possibly the least competent manager I have ever worked for. They also get stack ranked, so have little incentive to look out for you.

It is brutal. I was "underperforming", however my reviews up to that point were good. I assume someone had to go, and that someone was to be me. I never went on focus or pivot as I worked my self out of it by reaching out to all my stakeholders to get feedback and get improvement areas, and thoroughly documenting every interaction with my manager. His "coaching" was basically to ignore anything good I did, and dispute where possible. At this point I realized that I was the sacrifice, and while I could stay if I wanted to, it wasn't worth it.

I chose my family and health over money, but many on visas are basically indentured. Unable to leave and forced to work 80-100 hour weeks, constantly worried about getting the tap on the shoulder.

Work at Amazon at your peril. No one leaves unscathed.
