Avoiding the negative

I had a large offer from Amazon after graduate school. There was one reason I did not accept it. I had first hand information from a couple friends who were working at Amazon. After hearing the facts straight from them, it did not make any sense to me to join such a work environment. One of them left Amazon to join Google, and is thriving there, which works well for him and his team and Google. When he was at Amazon, he became constantly cynical, negative and felt that the work environment was affecting him personally. As a developer, I need to be happy to provide good quality and thoughtful solutions. I'm sure not everyone is like me and many may certainly thrive at Amazon, but I certainly couldn't see myself doing underhanded things to succeed at Amazon.
