Frugal hypocrisy

The Frugality Leadership Principal is the biggest source of hypocrisy here at Amazon.

For example, it means insane things like paying interns a six figure annualized salary but not paying $30 for their checked bag on their flight or paying for their Uber to the airport.

There's no free food (not for everyone on a regular basis anyway, like at Google or FB) but it's okay for highly paid engineers to spend a couple hours going out to get lunch and still leave at the same time without getting as much done.

There's hardly any company swag and they actually created an online store to ask you to buy it a couple years back.

There's no free Prime and every employee only gets a stingy $100 annual employee discount (and only after you spend $1000 on items sold by Amazon themselves)

And yet, I've seen a bunch of executives have a "retreat" at any expensive resort, all-expenses paid, for a couple of weeks. Those same executives (L7 and up, but especially L10 and L11) also buy themselves many expensive meals at company expense all of the time.

But when annual review time comes around and they can't find another reason to ding your performance, they concoct some kind of BS Frugality excuse.
