A sink or swim environment

Amazon is a sink or swim environment. The managers encourage that type of environment to see which employees can survive, even if swimming means drowning your colleagues in the process. You will never read articles about Amazon's altruistic role in the community. They do not encourage employees to volunteer in the community since that will take away from their being pushed to work 24x7 by their incompetent managers who don't know how to actually manage talented employees to do their job in an optimal way.

The prestige of working for Amazon is not worth the complete loss of a personal life. Evenings and weekends will be destroyed with anxiety as emails, pages (whether you're on-call or not), and responding to the whims of incompetent managers will continually require immediate attention, just to survive politically.

There will soon be a tipping point in our industry where employees that raise the hiring bar will no longer be willing to work for Amazon. The current management style of "turn-and-burn" is not sustainable. The Amazon ecosystem is poisoned at the root and it will require a great deal of overcoming denial at the most senior levels to finally correct the damage, if it can be done at all.
