Too much manager leeway

After being in 3 different orgs during my 5+ years at Amazon, I'll say that Amazon seems to give a lot of leeway to its middle managers and staff - and it is statistically unavoidable that some will use that leeway to act in an abusive fashion. The real problem here is there are no checks and balances for the abuse and even trying to escalate the abuse will get you fired. I've never heard of a single case where someone actually successfully challenged their abuse, since the victims are always blamed for everything that went wrong and then paid for their silence with a severance package.
