Cheap culture

Amazon has a cheap culture when it comes to compensating employees. It claims that it pays well for a high tech job but in reality the unpaid on-call work in the dead of the night and on weekends are not compensated. There may be continuous weeks when you spend all of your time fixing data on screwed up customer accounts and not write a single line of code. This is unbelievable for a software engineering job!

The Amazon culture is to burn people out and then replace them with new people. That's why the number of open positions never go down on the Amazon jobs site. Amazon benefits are not on par with other tech companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc. In fact, they are nowhere close.

There is stack ranking in performance reviews and you may be working hard with good results but never get rewarded unless you're put at the top of the list by management.

The bottom line is most people dislike working at Amazon because it burns them out for lower compensation compared to other top tech companies where these people can work.
