Examples of abuse

I worked for approximately 6 years in Amazon and I agree with almost all of the points reported publicly like on this FACE website. Here are some examples:

1. I returned to work a week after my surgery and my boss told me, "I am being very fair extending your deadline by a week. If that is not done, you are going on a performance improvement plan."

2. A pregnant colleague even though she was late in her term wasn't allowed to leave oncall rotation because that would set bad precedent. She quit after giving birth.

3. For all developers out there, your manager counts the number of code commits you make and uses that to evaluate how productive you are. It doesn't matter whether you worked 1 week to get that commit in or just 1 minute, it is just counted the same.

4. Frugality to the extreme: Milk in the fridge was meant for enriching the beverages. That was not for cereals or to drink as such. In a 30 or 40 person office, we got emails saying 6 liters of milk didn't last for 3 days and that wasn't acceptable.

5. You troubleshoot and resolve a problem at 3am when you are oncall. The next morning your boss asks "Why did it take 23 minutes to resolve instead of 16?".

6. Everything can be made to look as if it was your fault by quoting the very generic Amazon values. "You didn't show bias for action", "you didn't prove to be correct most of the times", "you didn't have the backbone to disagree" and "you didn't show ownership" etc
