Paula Monsalve

  • Paula Monsalve (b.1966, Linares, Chile - ) – Singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Born and raised in Chile, Monsalve starting singing and playing guitar at age seven. Immersed in Spanish, Andean, and Mapuche traditions, she played in various folk ensembles throughout her youth and adolescence. At age twenty – while living in Spain – she became a popular performer of Latin American folk music and original music at night clubs and coffee houses of Madrid. At that time, she began a collaboration with Chilean composer/performer Joakin Bello. The two of them toured Europe and North American and recorded three albums together in the early 1980s. Starting in 1984, Monsalve has lived in Indiana, where she has performed her native music regularly at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (beginning in 1986). She has also performed with the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and the Anderson Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Monsalve has presented her Hispanic musical traditions to universities, including the IUPU of Fort Wayne and Ball State University. Monsalve has performed at multiple well-known locations in Indianapolis; they include the Artsgarden, and the Jazz Kitchen. In 2015, she recorded her ninth album.
