Harry Miedema

Harry Miedema – Saxophonist, educator, arranger, and composer. A graduate of Lawrence Central High School, Miedema received degrees from Indiana University in the 1970s and studied jazz under David Baker. From 1976 to 1997, he worked as musical director (1979-84) and saxophonist with the legendary O’Jays, with whom he appeared on the Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Hard Rock Live (VH1), Vibe (UPN Network), and Live at Hammersmith Odeon (BBC). He has also played with Lou Rawls, Natalie Cole, and The Temptations. For many years, he led an Indy-based combo called Deep 6, and currently he fronts Bossa Rio, a six-piece Latin band that formed in 2003. He also plays with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra when needed. Since 1985, he has been affiliated with the University of Indianapolis, where he is currently the Director of Jazz Studies. In addition, he has composed and arranged for FHJ Music and published Jazz Style and Analysis: Alto Saxophone (Maher, 1975).
