Thomas Hampson

Thomas Hampson (b. Elkhart, June 28, 1955 - ) – Operatic baritone. Although born in Elkhart, Hampson grew up in Spokane, Washington, and studied with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, among others. In 1981, he won the Metropolitan Opera Auditions competition. Since then, he has performed countless leading roles in major opera houses around the world, including many prestigious venues in Germany. Among his many recordings, Hampson sang the lead role in a Grammy award-winning recording of Wagner’s Tännhauser in 2003. He has been a part of six other recordings that have received Grammy nominations. In addition to being one of the country’s leading operatic baritones, he is also a champion of German art song and Mahler's orchestral lieder.
