Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University. One of the leading and largest music programs in the world, the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University employs over 170 full-time faculty members, who distinguish themselves among the leading performers and scholars in their respective fields. Internationally known artists currently on the faculty include Atar Arad (viola), Joshua Bell (violin), Dale Clevenger (horn), Eli Eban (clarinet), Jeff Nelson (horn), Mark Kaplan (violin), Menahem Pressler (piano), Carole Vaness (soprano), Claude Baker (composer), David Dzubay (composer), and André Watts (piano). Former faculty members include Josef Gingold (violin), Bernard Heiden (composer), Harvey Phillips (tuba), Paul Hillier (early music tenor), David Baker (Director of Jazz Studies), Sylvia McNair (soprano), Gary Hoffman (cello), Leonard Slatkin (conductor), Carol Wincenc (flute), Eugene Rousseau (saxophone), Harvey Sollberger (composer), Jaime Laredo (violin), Philip Farkas (horn), William Adam (trumpet), and Janos Starker (cello). In addition, around half of the school’s 1,600 music majors study at the graduate level. Among the countless alumni who have gone on to illustrious performing careers are Edgar Meyer (bass), Sylvia McNair (soprano), Frederic Chiu (piano), Joshua Bell (violin), Corey Cerovsek (violin), Vivica Genaux (mezzo soprano), Peter Erskine (jazz drummer), Michael Brecker (jazz saxophonist), Randy Brecker (jazz trumpet player), Chris Botti (jazz trumpet player), John Clayton (jazz bassist), and Booker T. Jones of Booker T. and the MGs. Throughout the year, the school offers over 1,000 performances, including a professional level opera series at the Musical Arts Center. Performance groups on campus include thirteen choirs, eight bands (concert and athletic), seven orchestras, and a renowned new music ensemble.
