Alicia Berneche

Alicia Berneche (b. Kokomo, January 1, 1971 - ) – Soprano. After graduating from Kokomo High School, Alicia Berneche studied voice at DePauw University with Vergene Miller and graduated in 1993. Next, she completed a Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody Conservatory in 1995. Since then, she has been in high demand as a lyric coloratura with opera companies throughout the country, including Austin Lyric Opera, Arizona Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Kentucky Opera, Opera Pacific (Santa Anna, California), Portland Opera, Virginia Opera, Orlando Opera, Skylight Opera (Milwaukee), and Sarasota Opera. She was a regional finalist in Metropolitan Opera auditions and has been on the MET’s roster. Her roles have ranged from Susannah in The Marriage of Figaro and the title character in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lamermoor to a plethora of roles in modern operas. In addition, she is also an accomplished concert singer, having performed works ranging from the standard repertoire to innovative contemporary pieces by Aaron Jay Kernis, Schulamit Ran, and Robert Kritz. Her professional career commenced with residencies with Orlando Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera. With Chicago Lyric in 2000, she replaced Dawn Upshaw as Daisey in John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby, which was only in its second performance. (Upshaw performed in the premiere performance at the MET a year earlier.) In 2002, she performed in the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Galileo, Galilei at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago as well as in follow-up productions at B.A.M. (Brooklyn) and the Barbican (London).
