Barney Liddell

Barney Liddell (b. Gary, August 13, 1921 – d. Los Angeles, May 5, 2003) – Trombonist. As a student at Horace Mann High School in Gary, Liddell settled on the trombone, his third choice after the unavailable saxophone and trumpet. After he matriculated at Notre Dame, he spent two years in the Army, where he was a bugler as well as a radio operator. Following his military discharge in 1945, he played in various New York City based bands including the Casa Loma Orchestra. In 1948, he joined the Lawrence Welk Orchestra and played first trombone with the Music Makers (the LW group) until its ABC television show ended in 1982.
