Debbie Andrews

Debbie Andrews (b. Lucy Johnson in Rome, Georgia, October 13, 1927 - d. Pasadena, California, March 27, 1987) -- Singer. The sister of drummer Sonny Johnson, Debbie Andrews grew up in Indianapolis and sang in the clubs on Indiana Avenue with the Montgomery-Johnson Quintet, which included her brother on drums. She also had success at the Flame Show Bar in Detroit. On January 31, 1952, Duke Ellington auditioned Andrews during his last night at Chicago's Regal Theater. She then toured with the Ellington band highlighted by a performance at Carnegie Hall. Andrews also graced the stages of Birdland and the Apollo Theater. She later worked in Hollywood.
