Dex Romweber

John Michael Dexter "Dex" Romweber (b. Batesville, June 18, 1966 -- ) -- Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist. Raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Dex Romweber is a well-known roots, rockabilly performer. His style is sometimes referred to as "pyschobilly." In the mid to late 1980s, he formed Flat Duo Jets with drummer Chris "Crow" Smith. After a move to Athens, Georgia, the duo ended up on a documentary Athens, GA: Inside Out, which also featured R.E.M. and the B-52s. In 1990, the band released a self-titled album, which prompted a national tour, opening for the Cramps and an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. Their second album, Go Go Harlem Baby 1992), impressed Jack White so much that he promoted it in the documentary It Might Get Loud. After releasing nine albums in fifteen years, Flat Duo Jets broke up, and he developed a solo act as well as forming the Dex Romweber Duo. As an example of his diversity, he recorded Piano in 2006, and it consists of him playing Chopinesque piano compositions. The Dex Romweber Duo has had considerable success with Crash Lareth playing drums with him from 1995 to 2007 and his sister Sara taking over until her death from cancer in 2019. Including all of his bands and solo work, he has been the leader on over twenty albums, including major labels MCA, Outpost and Bloodshot. He has also been an influence on Neko Case, Cat Power, and Jack White.
