Bill Moring

Bill Moring (b. Fort Wayne, 1958 - ) – Bassist. Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Bill Moring attended Indiana State University for a year and then played in the Indianpolis and Cincinnati areas for several years. At that time, he played with local artists Steve Allee, Claude Sifferlen and John Von Ohlen and passing-through headliners such as Dizzy Gillespie and Slide Hampton. After moving to New York in 1984, Moring played with the bands of Mel Lewis, Woody Herman (1985 tour), and Count Basie (1987 tour). As a high demand freelance bassist in New York, he has picked up gigs with such greats as Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Al Cohn, Mel Torme, Joe Williams, and Dianne Schurr. His extensive discography includes work with Steve Allee (trio and big band), Lionnel Hampton, John Hart, Royce Campbell, and Jamey Aebersold (play-a-long CDs). He has also worked at Jamey Aebersold’s workshops. As leader of a quartet, he has recently recorded two CDs, the first being Bill Moring and Way Out East (Astoria Records, 2005) and Spaces in Time (2008) with Indy’s Owl Studios. As of October 27, 2008, Moring’s Spaces in Time was #25 on the Jazz Album Chart in Jazz Week.
