Jazz

The Jazz section is by far the largest in the website. This might be a result of the whirlwind of jazz performances in the clubs on Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis and others spread throughout the city, especially in the '50s. As musicians learned their craft on the Indiana Avenue, they were preparing themselves for a professional career in jazz. Some became jazz legends and perhaps even the best on his instrument, namely Wes Montgomery (guitar) and J.J. Johnson (trombone). Although not from Indianapolis, vibraphonist Gary Burton is also considered one of the best ever on his instrument. While Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) is a well-known and well-respected artist who crossed over into many styles, many other Hoosiers (mainly from Indianapolis) are no strangers to the serious jazz fan; they include Larry Ridley (bass), Eddie Condon (guitar), Claude Thornhill (progressive band leader from Terre Haute), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Slide Hampton (trombone), Phil Ranelin (trombone), and James Spaulding (alto saxophone and flute). As shown in the bios and videos herein, many more played professionally as leaders and important sidemen to the some of the top acts in the country. In addition, Indiana claims the A-B-C's of jazz education in Jamey Aebersald, David Baker, and Jerry Coker. In short, Indiana jazz musicians collectively exemplify a wide range of jazz styles and eras, from Dixieland and Big Band Swing to Fusion and Smooth Jazz.
