Songwriters and Lyricists

Most of the the songwriters and lyricists included in this section contributed to popular songs during the first half of the 1900s. The list of songwriters given here represent the Tin Pan Alley tradition of popular song and musical theater. Of particular note, Hoosiers Hoagy Carmichael and Cole Porter are among the most prolific and successful of all American songwriters. In addition, the five von Tilzer/Gumm brothers made significant contributions to Tin Pan Alley as songwriters, publishers, performers, and managers.
