Bobby Sherwood

Bobby Sherwood (b. Indianapolis, May 30, 1914 – d. Auburn, Massachusetts, January 23, 1981) – Bandleader, trumpet player, rhythm guitarist, actor, and composer. Sherwood had a diverse professional career, starting out as a Hollywood studio musician. In spite of his steady income, he opted for fame by forming the Sherwood Orchestra (1942-48), which scored it big with his own tunes, “The Elks’ Parade” and “Sherwood’s Forest.” Although the band did not achieve much commercial success, Sherwood boosted his own career and gave teenaged saxophonist Zoot Sims his professional debut. In 1948, he composed music for the film Campus Sleuth, in which he also acted. In the 1950s, he appeared in three films including Pal Joey (1957), hosted the game-show Quick as a Flash (1953), served as a panelist on Masquerade Party (1954-57), performed for the Milton Berle Show (1948, 192-53), and was a regular cast member for the Red Buttons Show, when it changed its format from a variety show to a situation comedy on NBC in 1952.
