Bruce Hubbard

Bruce Hubbard (b. Indianapolis, 1952 – d. Manhattan, November 12, 1991) – Singer. An African-American operatic baritone from Indianapolis, Bruce Hubbard appeared in the original productions of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha (1972) and Lerner and Bernstein’s 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (1976). He was also a cast member in several revivals of Show Boat, the most remarkable being a live staged production on EMI in 1988. In addition, he appeared in Porgy and Bess at the Glyndebourne Festival stage and with the Metropolitan Opera. In the Glyndebourne version, which was nominated for an Emmy, he played Jake the Fisherman. He was also in a televised MET production of Carmen (1987), in which he played the smuggler La Dancaire. In 1990, Hubbard released his only solo album For You, For Me, which includes Copland’s Old American Songs. In 1991—the year he died tragically of pneumonia—he was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Best Actor Award for playing Joe in a London revival of Show Boat.
