Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket)

Carl Broemel (b. Indianapolis, January 30, 1974 - ) – Guitarist, saxophonist, and back-up vocalist. Born and raised in Indianapolis, guitarist Carl Broemel got his start in a rock band called Planet Earth, which had a following a Indianapolis and Bloomington. When the band broke up in 1994, he made himself available to various groups until ending up in Old Pike, which formed in Bloomington in the fall of 1995. Heavily influenced by roots rockers like Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp, Old Pike enjoyed a four-year journey to fame (or at least “near fame”), which included a national tour with the Ben Folds Five and culminated in a contract with Sony 550. A classically trained guitarist at Indiana University, Broemel has also performed and recorded as a solo guitarist, working out of Nashville and Los Angeles. In 2004, Broemel joined My Morning Jacket, a rising alternative rock band based in Louisville. Since Broemel joined the band, My Morning Jacket has continued to expand its fanbase and earned a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Alternative Album for Evil Urges (ATO Records, 2008). Lastly, Rolling Stone magazine included Broemel in a list of “20 New Guitar Gods.” Since 2004, he has released 5 solo albums and has played on 4 studio albums with My Morning Jacket.
