Jevetta Steele

Jevetta Steele (b. Gary, November 11, 1963 - ) – Originally from Gary, Steele is a long-time resident of Minneapolis. After starting her career in music theater—including a seven-year run with the Broadway show The Gospel at Colonus—Steele has enjoyed a varied and highly acclaimed singing career. With three solo albums to her credit (1988-2006), Steele sings in a myriad of styles including soul, jazz, and Gospel. Although she is best known for her Academy award-nominated performance of “Calling You” from the film Baghdad Café (1988), she has appeared on recordings and/or tours with Prince, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, 10,000 Maniacs, and Natalie Merchant, among others. She has also performed with the Gospel group called The Steeles. Another aspect of her career involves singing advertisement jingles, as she has recorded for AT & T, Hefty Trash Begs, and Rainbow Foods. Lastly, she has written an autobiographical musical entitled Two Queens: One Castle.
