Carrie Newcomer

Carrie Newcomer (b. Dowagiac, Michigan, May 25, 1958 - ) -- Singer and songwriter. Raised in Elkhart, Newcomer first received critical attention in the 1980s as lead singer with the folk group Stone Soup, which she released three albums with between 1982 and 1987. After performing regionally for many years, she gained additional exposure in the 1990s by touring the United States and Europe with Alison Krauss and Union Station. As a solo recording artist, Newcomer has recorded sixteen albums, mainly on Philo. In that time, she has developed an individual style characterized by spirituality and activism. Of particular note, her song “I Should’ve Known Better” appeared on folk trio Nickel Creek’s This Side (2002), which went gold and won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2007, she wrote a theme song for the YMCA. For several decades, she has been based in Bloomington and has worked with Krista Detor, Tim Grimm, and Tom Roznowski. Within the next year, she has bookings throughout each month, including a album release at the Buskirk Chumley Theater in Bloomington (June 8, 2019). Her music is strongly influenced by her social views and has taken trips as a cultural ambassador to India and Kenya.
