Classical

Many composers, conductors, opera and concert singers, and instrumentalists appear in this category. With concern over the scope of this section, I have only included members of professional orchestras and faculty members of universities if they had previously lived in Indiana. For the same reason, I have not included musicians who only lived in Indiana during college. As evidenced in this section, several institutions and professional organizations have contributed greatly to the wealth of classical music performance in Indiana, among them the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Bands of America, Percussive Arts Society, Drum Corp International, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and the American Pianists Association. Furthermore, Indiana is known for music manufacturing, as Elkhart has been known as the "band instrument capital of the world."
