Grey Larsen

Grey Larsen (b. New York City, January 27, 1955 - ) – Multi-instrumentalist (Irish flute, tin whistle, concertina, guitar, and piano), recording engineer, composer, and author. A New Yorker by birth, Larsen grew up in Cincinnati and learned piano at age four. His college studies began at the Cincinnati Conservatory and continued at Oberlin College, where he gave equal attention to classical and traditional music. Following graduation, the latter (especially Irish flute and Appalachian fiddle traditions) became his life passion. Since the 1970s, he has been a mainstay on the folk festival circuit and has recorded prolifically (most notably on Windham Hill and Sugar Hill) as a soloist and with other folk musicians. In 1981, he moved to Bloomington and has collaborated with fiddlers Brad Leftwich and the legendary Lotus Dickey and long-time friend Malcolm Dalglish. An author of eight instructional books with Mel Bay, Larsen is a world authority on the Irish flute and whistle playing. Lastly, he is the musical editor of Sing Out, a folk music quarterly. As shown together above, he currently performs records with New England singer-songwriter Cindy Kallet.
