Steven Sater

Steven Sater (b. Evansville - ) – Playwright, poet, and lyricist. An Evansville Harrison graduate, Sater received a graduate degree from Princeton University and then worked for a New York literary agent, while he wrote in his leisure time. At that time in his life, he met his future creative partner, Duncan Sheik, through his involvement with Soka Gakkai, a lay Buddhist organization. At Sater’s suggestion, Sheik composed music for Sater’s play called Umbrage. The two also collaborated on Nero (2006), The Nightingale (2006), and Spring Awakening (2007). For his work as lyricist on Spring Awakening, Sater won numerous awards including Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Musical Score (lyrics).
