The Mudkids

The Mudkids – Rap group. The Mudkids originated in 1997 when Russell Johnson, leader of the popular band Birdmen of Alcatraz, met IU student Tyler Knapp. At that point, the nucleus of the band was intact with Johnson (aka “Rusty Redenbacher” or “MC cHoc Surreal”) on lead vocals and Knapp (aka “DJ Elp-Mass”) on scratches. In recent years, Brian “Skitz” Philps (aka “Freestyle Assasin”) and Ryan “DJ Helicon” have complemented the line-up, although the Mudkids have resumed to performing as a duo. From 1998 to 2006, the Mudkids have released four albums on independent labels (starting on Surf Records), and they are completing a new one entitled We Are Dynamic and People Like Us. In addition, Russell Johnson has completed a solo project called Lazarus. A well-known artist in the city, Johnson worked for around ten years at Rockin’ Billy’s Music and currently is a clerk at Northside News in Broad Ripple and a VJ for IMC. Considered by many to be the top underground rap group in the city (and especially popular in Broad Ripple), the Mudkids have attracted a national following mainly through their albums, web broadcasts, and the Colts anthem “Go Blue,” which got ample exposure during the journey to the Super Bowl in January 2007. They have also attracted listeners by sharing the stage with giants like Eminem, Snoop Dog, and Rhymefest. In short, critics have praised the Mudkids for their clever wordplay and diverse sampling, which includes anything from jazz and soul to classical and ethnic traditions.
