Michael Palmer

Conducting the Georgia State University Orchestra

Michael Palmer (b. Indianapolis, May 8, 1945 – ) – Orchestral conductor. A native of Indianapolis, Palmer got his first major appointment as assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 1967 at the tender age of twenty-one. He later became the associate conductor with ASO, and, in 1975, the National Endowment of the Arts honored him as Exxon/Arts Endowment conductor. After leaving the ASO in 1977, he had long tenures as Musical Director with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra (1977-1990), the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (1989-1997), and American Sinfonietta (1991-2002). In addition, he has served as Director of Orchestras at Wichita State University (1999-2004) and Georgia State University (2004-present). Since 1993, he has been the Musical Director for the Bellingham Festival of Music in the state of Washington. Lastly, his discography includes recordings with Summit Records, New World Records, and Natural Soundfields.
