The Van Brothers

Arnold Van Winkle

The Van Brothers -- Arnold and Lee Van Winkle, who recorded separately and together as the Van Brothers. The Van Winkle Brothers were originally from Tennessee, but their carer eventually took them to Indiana. Their recordings span from 1956 to 1962, and Arnold's single "An Old Rusty Dime" on the Ruby label in Hamilton, Ohio, in 1857 was the first rockabilly style song between them. Around January of 1960, they started recording together as the Van Brothers. At this time, they were performing in Indianapolis and recorded "Servant of Love" on the Poor Boy label in Richmond (then later, Muncie). Considered a rockabilly classic, a 45 of "Servant of Love" goes for about $400 dollars. Several of their songs are backed by the Gentry Brothers, and Dale Gentry's guitar solos on "Servant of Love" are definitely worth the listen. The Van Brothers also released several singles on the Walton label, which was housed at Poor Boy in Richmond.
