LIMITATIONS:
Tumblers are physically incapable of leaving the ground under their own power. If momentum would normally take a regular vehicle over a jump or careening over a cliff, the Tumbler makes a sudden, jarring turn downward to keep itself attached to the ground at all times. This equates to any check to voluntarily jump off the ground automatically fails and any check that would require a jump to avoid a crash is increased by +5 as the Tumbler makes the jarring flip forward. However such situations are rare with a Tumbler as it can simply go underground.
CONSTRUCTION:
Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, Bind Elemental, Move Earth
Cost: 50,000 gp; a Khyber dragonshard worth at least 50,000 gp
This large stone sphere has a diameter of 30 feet, but is mostly hollow with only a single door. Inside, there are three rows, stepped by about 2 feet each. In the front row, to the left side, there is a chair and the elemental helm. Under the rows of seats, a massive Khyber dragonshard keeps an earth elemental bound. A Tumbler has the ability to travel overland or along the bottoms of oceans or lakes, at 10 miles per hour, but more importantly, it can burrow at 2 miles per hour. In order to do either, the door to the Tumbler must be closed, at which point the interior becomes airtight. The driver, or anyone touching the elemental helm gains tremorsense of 300', but only to what is outside of the Tumbler, not inside. The Tumbler is capable of holding enough air for 120 days of air, divided among the pilot and passengers as per the rules of Suffocation. In order to refresh the air, the Tumbler must return to another source of air and take 1 hour to vent.
Getting lost while burrowing, in relation to the surface, is very easy to do. Knowing which way is up is the same as knowing which way is down. But, navigating in any other direction while burrowed requires you to either stay within 300' of the surface or other significant underground terrain feature. Otherwise, the pilot must make Survival checks, DC 25, every hour. Failure means that you are lost. Navigational aids that rely on the sun or magnets will not work while burrowing. It is for this reason that, while not many Tumblers have ever been made, those that were have almost all been lost between the surface of Eberron.
