Umbral Spy

"This is insane. Why am I under arrest", the magistrate demand while being led by a contingent of Deneith guards.

"Sir. You were the only one that knew where the prisoner was being kept, the command words to undo the wards to his cell and the combination to his locks. Whoever broke him out last night did not even slow down to deal with those defenses." the captain of the troop spat back at him. "If we're lucky, the Misery Marauder might... might be recaptured before he takes another innocent life."

Half way across town, the Misery Marauder was picking up his things. His savoir, an elf of House Thuranni looked on from the doorway; a small whispy creature at his side with eyes of sickly yellow.

"I don't know how you got me out, but I assume it wasn't free."

"Oh, of course not", the elf petted the head of his imp. "We have someone very important we need you to kill."

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): In any area darker than bright illumination, an umbral spy can use the Stealth skill even when being observed.

Shadow Bond (Su): As a standard action, the umbral spy can attempt to bind with the shadow of a Small size or larger corporeal creature. In order to do so, the creature must be within an area of normal or bright light and the umbra spy must in the adjacent square to the creature, opposite from the source of light. The targeted creature then makes a Will save, DC 14. If the creature fails, the umbral spy is now bound to the creature's shadow. It is no longer considered a separate creature. It follows the target creature wherever it goes, senses anything target creature senses, and understands anything said within earshot, provided that the umbral spy, not the targeted creature, knows the language. This saving throw DC is Charisma based and includes the Ability Focus feat. The target creature never realizes it has been targeted, even if it makes its saving throw

The target creature gets a new saving throw every 24 hours to make the umbral spy leave his shadow, although the umbral spy can leave on its own as a free action, materializing in an adjacent square, opposite of a light source. While an umbral spy is attached to a creature's shadow, it cannot be detected without a thorough examination via True Seeing or a similar effect. Since True Seeing does not see through clothing, the umbral spy is often safely hidden from a casual examination with True Seeing.

An umbral spy cannot attack, be attacked or otherwise be targeted separately from the targeted creature in a physical manner while bonded. The umbral spy is considered incoporeal and in the same square as the targeted creature.

Thought Link (Su): An umbral spy can trasmit any of its memories telepathically to any creature that has an Intelligence of 3 or more within 10 feet that has the bone left over from its creation. It cannot use this ability while bonded with its Shadow Bond ability.

Umbral spies are small constructs, made of equal combinations of shadow stuff from Mabar and the dying life energies of a humanoid of the shapechanger subtype. Creating as spies and informants by Karrnath, their use quickly spread to some of the dragonmarked houses and other covert agencies around Khorvaire.

Construction:

Umbral spies are crafted from the smoke given from a dead humanoid with the shapechanger subtype, powdered onyx and an intact bone from the dead humanoid, which the master keeps in order to receive the information it collects. The body itself costs 500 gp. Umbral spies can be created with additional Hit Dice, each additional an additional 2,500 gp to the base cost.
