Raven Skull Rod

Aura: Faint Transmutation; CL: 3rd

Slot: Neck; Price: 4,000 gp (see text); Wgt: 5 lbs

Source: EB, pg. 157

Description: This rod is always made as part of a set, between a minimum of two to a maximum of twelve. The price and construction cost listed is for a single Raven Skull Rod, but individually, these rods are useless. Their purpose is to allow communication between other rods of the same batch. Three times per day, as a full-round action that does not provoke, you can designate another Raven Skull Rod within the same batch to receive a message of 25 words or less. To do so, you speak the name of the rod you wish to send the message to (wielding the Raven Skull Rod immediately gives you the names of the other rods within its batch that still exist) and then the message you wish to send. So long as the rod receiving the message is within 3 miles of you at the time you send the message, it will immediately make a loud hissing sound, followed by your message, word for word. Otherwise, your rod will make the same loud hissing sound immediately, letting you know the recipient is out of range.

Given that these rods were always made in sets, but they were originally made centuries ago, most sets currently contain only 1d4+1 rods and while they are usually not found together in the wilderness, rods from the same set have been known to be found within a day's walk of each other. Adding a new Raven Skull Rod to a set require all other rods of the same set to be present for the creation process.
