Thankfully, the guards didn't think that the fancy clasp on her cloak was a real scarab. It's golden carapace and bright green wings could easily have been someone's handiwork. But this was no Cannith trinket. Even after the guards relieved her of her rings, her potions and even the Bag of Holding she had folded in the bottom of her boot, they didn't take the scarab. And that was fine. She only needed those other things getting in here. Once she was close to the lord cardinal, she wouldn't need anything but a shard of sharpened shell to slit him from stem to stern.

Host Benefits:

Create Shard (Ex): The throwing scarab is able to generate a piece of carapace that can be pulled off once per round. Once removed, the shard is a light slashing weapon, dealing 1d4 points. It has a critical range of 19-20/x2 and a throwing range of 20'. Upon a successful hit, the carapace dissolves within the target, dealing an extra 1d6 points of acid damage. These shards do not last for more than 1 round after being removed from the scarab, but it is able generate them at a steady pace of once per round. Drawing a carapace shard is treating like drawing a dagger.

Telepathy (Su): A throwing scarab can communicate telepathically with its host, if the host has a language.

Throwing scarabs are warped beetles, twisted so their lower carapace is easily detached and regrown. During the war with the Dhakaani, having sappers being able to get inside the hobgoblin fortifications and disable them from within required a source of elemental damage that did not backfire in less than intelligent hands. At the end of the war, most throwing scarabs were confiscated by the hobgoblins but a few swarms can be found in the caves of southeastern Khorvaire. Throwing scarabs are based on the price of a dagger with Returning and Corrosive, but without the +1 enchantment bonus.
