Cyran Avenger

Description:

Every Cyran still alive remembers where they were on the Day of Mourning. Most were out of the country. A rare few managed to be awake that early fall morning and outran the fog that killed a nation. But, regardless of where they were or what they were doing, every Cyran feels the deep loss of a grand, beautiful kingdom.... an entire people.... snuffed out in a single event. Most fall into depression. Others seek to remake themselves in some other identity. But there are those that remember... those who know someone, somewhere is responsible... and they will make them pay.

They are Cyran Avengers.

Role: Cyran avengers can appeal to anyone from Cyre that survived the Day of Mourning. Those that are drawn to the path are those who lost everything in the aftermath. Many soldiers, covert agents and deeply patriotic souls managed to survive the Day of Mourning and when they return to the torn, distorted wasteland that was their home, the need for vengeance is overwhelming. Whether the individual avenger is straight forward or sneaky, martially or magically inclined, it does not matter.

Alignment: Cyran Avengers can be of any alignment, but they are rarely lawful. Those that are often seek out the Prince-in-Exile and serve him as would the knights of Cyre might have.

Class Features:

All of the following are class features of the cyran avenger prestige class.

Weapons and Armor Proficiency: Cyran avengers do not gain any new proficiencies with weapons or armor.

Spells per Day / Spells Known: At the indicated levels, a cyran gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain other benefits a character of that class would have gained, except for additional spells per day, spells known (if he is a spontaneous caster), and an increased effective level of spellcasting. If he had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a cyran avenger, he must decide to which class she adds the new level for the purpose of determining spells per day. Once this decision is made, it cannot be changed. Artificers and their infusions count as a spellcasting class for this prestige class.

If, and only if, the cyran avenger has no spellcasting class become his first level in this prestige class, this entire class feature is replaced one bonus feat at the indicated levels. He cannot voluntarily choose to take bonus feats instead of spellcasting levels. He must still qualify for the bonus feat normally.

Avenging Smite (Su): At 1st level, the cyran avenger learns how to channel his anger over the loss of his homeland toward those that threatened or still threaten Cyrans today. This functions as the smite evil class feature, as per the paladin class feature of the same name, complete with a set number of times per day it can be used, as detailed above. However, it comes with a few significant differences. First, alignment, race or creature type do not affect the avenging smite; it can only be used on targets that are classified as an enemy of Cyre.

Second, to qualify as an enemy of Cyre, the target only has to meet one of the following conditions.

  • The target cannot be from Cyre and has physically harmed someone who is from Cyre within the past hour.

  • The target cannot be from Cyre and seeks to harm more than 6 people from Cyre that are not related by blood or marriage.

  • The target has harmed or seeks to harm the Prince-in-Exile.

  • The target has claimed or seeks to claim a portion of Cyre for another country, including founding another country on top of Cyre

  • The target participated in the Last War, in a position of authority, against Cyre.

Third, if the target has spent any significant amount of time helping Cyrans or making restitution toward Cyrans and does not currently seek to harm any Cyran, they no longer qualify as a valid target.

Lastly, the bonuses for avenging smite are determined as a bonus to attack and a deflection bonus to AC equal to the cyran avenger's Charisma modifier and a bonus to damage equal to his character level. If the cyran avenger targets someone who was a leader of an army that opposed Cyre (general or higher) who was unrepentant, someone classified as a war criminal against Cyre (regardless of repenting), or someone that was directly involved with causing the events of the Day of Mourning, the bonus to damage is twice his character level. Regardless of amount of damage, the avenging smite allows the attack to bypass damage reduction.

Because of these requirements, cyran avengers do not use their avenging smite ability without thoroughly researching their target first. In all other ways, this power is identical to a paladin's smite evil class feature.

Enemy Region: At 1st level, the cyran avenger gains the favored enemy class feature, as per the ranger class feature of the same, but with one important exception. The favored enemy of a cyran avenger is not based on creature type. It is based on region of origin. When the cyran avenger gets this class ability, he chooses one region on Khorvaire, with the exception of the Demon Wastes. Any sentient creature with that region as its region of origin qualifies as a favored enemy for the purposes of this class feature. The cyran avenger gets the standard +2 bonus on Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive and Survival checks against these targets, the ability to make Knowledge checks untrained concerning them and the standard +2 bonus to attack and damage against them.

At 3rd level and 5th level, the cyran avenger chooses another region to be an enemy region, with the same bonuses. He also gets to increase the bonuses of one region (including the one just chosen) by another +2. Normally, these regions cannot be changed when chosen, even through retraining, but if the cyran avenger learns something significantly important (i.e. plot) that changes his view, he might be allowed to change it then.

Discern Lies (Sp): At 2nd level, the cyran avenger is able to cast Discern Lies as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his character level. This can be used once per day. The saving throw DC is Charisma based.

Speak With Dead (Sp): At 4th level, the cyran avenger is able to cast Speak With Dead as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his character level. This can be used once per day. The saving throw DC is Charisma based.
