Living Spell

Living Spells are examples of what happens when raw magic is allowed to bleed over entire terrains, condensing and collecting into physical manifestations that mimic the spells that were cast over and over again their presence. Acting only on a knee-jerk reflex to attackers, a Living Spell is still a horrible opponent to deal with, particularly for those unable to deal with at range. Examples of living spells include:

Creating a Living Spell

To create a Living Spell, first determine the spell or spells that are used to make up the Living Spell. Only spells that have a range of touch, close, medium or long and target a single or multiple preexisting targets can be used. Thus, Fireball and Burning Hands can be used, but Summon Monster I and Detect Magic cannot. Note that spells can be modified with metamagic feats and this can place the individual spell levels above 9th, however do not factor the spell level alteration from the Elemental Spell metamagic feat if you use it in the Living Spell's creation.

Once all of the spells have been chosen, the highest spell used is referred to as the primary spell. Each additional spell used in creating the Living spell is referred to as a secondary spell. The caster level for the living spell is minimum necessary to cast the primary spell level. For primary spells with levels of 10 or more, the caster level is equal to twice the primary spell level, minus 1. Once the primary spell's level, all of the secondary spell's levels and the caster level has been determined, use those below to determine the attributes of the Living spell. If a spell appears on multiple spell lists, use the lowest spell level available.

CR: The CR of a Living Spell is equal to its primary spell's level plus one half its caster level, rounding down, to a minimum of 1. If secondary spells are used as part of the Living Spell, total all secondary spell levels and divide by two, rounding up. Add this to the Living Spell's CR. Thus a Living Spell comprised of an Ice Storm and a Fireball would have a caster level of 7th (the minimum needed to cast Ice Storm). The CR would be 4 (Ice Storm's spell level) plus 3 (one half the caster level, rounded down) plus 2 (one half of Fireball's spell level, rounded up), making it a total of a CR 9.

Alignment: Living spells are neutral as they are not intelligent. However, if the primary spell has an alignment descriptor (chaos, good, evil or law), the Living Spell counts as that alignment for the purposes of spells and effects.

Size and Type: All Living Spells are oozes. Their size is dependent on their caster level: 1st - 6th, Medium, 7th - 12th: Large, 13th - 18th: Huge, 19th and higher: Gargantuan.

Attributes: Living Spells do not have Intelligence scores. Their Strength, Constitution and Charisma scores are equal to 10 + the primary spell's level, while their Dexterity and Wisdom scores are equal to 7 + the primary spell's level. If the Living Spell is Large size or larger, adjust the Strength, Dexterity and Constitution scores appropriately. See the chart below for quickly calculated statistics.

AC: Living Spells get a deflection bonus to their AC equal to the primary spell's level. This is further modified by the Living Spell's size.

Hit Dice: Like all oozes, Living Spells use d8 Hit Dice and get the normal Constitution modifier to their hit points. The number of Hit Dice is equal to the Living Spell's caster level.

Defensive Abilities: All Living Spells have damage reduction of 10 / magic and spell resistance equal to 10 + its Hit Dice. This is in addition to standard ooze traits.

Speed: Living spells only have a ground movement rate. Their speed is based on the range of the primary spell. Touch and close range are 20' per round. Medium is 40' per round. Long is 60' per round.

Attacks: Like all oozes, the Living Spell's BAB is 3/4 of it's Hit Dice, rounded down. Use this with their size, Strength and Dexterity modifiers to determine CMB and CMD appropriately. Living spells get one slam attack, using their BAB, Strength modifier and size modifier as appropriate.

Damage: A Living Spell's slam attack is appropriate to their size (Medium: 1d4, Large: 1d6, Huge: 1d8, Gargantuan: 2d6), adding the Strength modifier for damage. Each slam attack also has the Spell Effect quality, detailed below.

Space / Reach: Living Spells have space and reach appropriate for their size; Medium: 5', Large: 10', Huge: 15', Gargantuan: 20'.

Special Attacks: All Living Spells have the following special attacks.

Spell Effect (Su): Each time the Living Spell successfully strikes a target with its slam attack, that target is affected by all spells that were used to create the Living Spell. The DC for each spell is equal to 10 + 1/2 the Living Spell's Hit Dice + the Living Spell's Charisma modifier. If the target has spell resistance, the Living Spell's caster level check is made once per strike, either allowing all spells or no spells to apply to the target.

If the spell effect would normally provide the caster with some sort of decision or choice (like with Dominate Person), the living spell is incapable of making that choice, with the exception of directing attacks, in which case any affected targets are always directed to attack the same target the living spell is currently attacking or the closest available target to the living spell, if the living spell is not attacking.

Engulf (Ex): As per the universal monster rules. The DC is equal to 10 + 1/2 the Living Spells' Hit Dice + the Living Spell's Strength modifier.

Spell Engulf (Su): Creatures that successfully engulfed are subject to all of the spells that make up the Living Spell each round. If a target has spell resistance, the Living Spell's caster level check is made only once per round per target, either allowing all spells or no spells to apply as appropriate. As the engulfed creatures are considered pinned, this will appropriately alter their saving throws.

Abilities: All Living Spells are blind, but have blindsight 60'.

Feats: Like oozes, Living Spells do not get feats.

Skills: Like oozes, Living Spells do not get skill ranks.
